{"id":20121,"date":"2025-06-27T14:43:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T14:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cocinando.us\/?p=20121"},"modified":"2025-06-27T14:43:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T14:43:26","slug":"boroux-vs-berkey-a-data-driven-comparison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cocinando.us\/?p=20121","title":{"rendered":"Boroux vs Berkey: A Data-Driven Comparison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In this review, we\u2019re going to be specifically comparing the <a href=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/big-berkey-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.25-gallon Big Berkey<\/a>, with two Black Berkey elements and two PF2 Fluoride filters, and <a href=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/boroux-legacy-water-filter-system-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 3-gallon Boroux Legacy<\/a>, with two Boroux Foundation filters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both did well at reducing most contaminants in our water<\/strong>, but both also had their specific issues: Berkey with aluminum oxide leaching and Boroux with cobalt leaching (Boroux also didn\u2019t remove fluoride). While Boroux has a lot of design improvements compared to Berkey, it still has design shortcomings, including the extremely lengthy filter priming process that we dislike so much about Berkey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"_The_Manufacturer_Clearbrook\">\ud83c\udfed The Manufacturer: Clearbrook<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before we get into our testing data, we want to share what we\u2019ve learned about the manufacturer of Berkey and Boroux systems (yes, they share the same!): Clearbrook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clearbrookfilters.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Clearbrook<\/a> is a manufacturer specializing in gravity-fed water filter cartridges, including, most notably, the Black Berkey elements.<\/p>\n<p>After the EPA issued Berkey several Stop Sale, Use or Removal Orders due to a compliance issue with a federal law, Clearbrook collaborated with\u200b James Enterprise Inc. (JEI), which had historically operated as a distributor for Berkey water filter systems through BerkeyFilters.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this collaboration, <a href=\"https:\/\/boroux.com\/blogs\/boroux-blog\/black-berkey-filters-are-no-longer-being-made-here-s-why?srsltid=AfmBOoqVcnxR8exoKJcg5W5W9gm5_bU5t6OvuQi47KaLyCFOT0-8MwzF&amp;utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">JEI and Clearbrook created EPA-compliant filters<\/a>, leading to the development of the Boroux Foundation filter.<\/p>\n<p>The Boroux brand was also designed to \u201cimprove functionality\u201d, addressing many of the issues that customers had experienced with Berkey.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"_Our_Testing_Data\">\ud83d\udcca Our Testing Data<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We tested and ranked the Boroux Legacy and Big Berkey systems using 6 main criteria. When we reviewed the Boroux system in June 2024, the manufacturer told us that they were in the process of designing a fluoride filter to be released soon, but nothing has changed since then (although the <a href=\"https:\/\/boroux.com\/pages\/what-does-boroux-foundation-filter-remove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">website<\/a> still claims: \u201cOur new fluoride filter coming soon!\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>6.9 \u00b5g\/L of cobalt appeared in our filtered water<\/strong>, most likely leached from the filter media. While it was a very small amount, it still exceeded the HGL of 2 \u00b5g\/L by 240%.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Berkey Compared<\/h5>\n<p>We conducted testing twice for Berkey because of an issue we experienced in our first test.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>In test 1, 11 contaminants with potential health effects were detected in our unfiltered water<\/strong>: chloroform, bromodichloromethane, cobalt, and lead (all detected in concentrations higher than the HGL), as well as copper, fluoride, strontium, sulfate, barium, manganese, and sodium.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- #tablepress-793 from cache --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Berkey reduced 100% lead, disinfection byproducts, copper, barium, and manganese<\/strong>, and reduced cobalt by 3.23%. Berkey got the higher score because it removed fluoride, but that\u2019s not to say we think the PF-2 filters are perfect. They\u2019re made of plastic, and the fact that they so easily leached activated alumina into our water concerns us. Plus, they sit in the lower chamber in the filtered water all the time\u2026\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When Boroux told us they were designing separate fluoride filters, we advised them to add fluoride removal media into the main Foundation filters to avoid the issues Berkey has with the separate PF-2 filters. <\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aesthetic Contaminants<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Boroux and Berkey both removed 100% chlorine<\/strong> (the only aesthetic contaminant detected in our unfiltered water). But Boroux got the higher score of 9.90, compared to Berkey\u2019s score of 6.70.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Berkey\u2019s aesthetic score was an average of test 1 and test 2, and had been pulled down by the extremely elevated aluminum levels in our test 1 filtered water. This increased the water\u2019s pH to 8.7, with possible aesthetic effects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certifications<\/h3>\n<p>Since <strong>neither Berkey nor Boroux has obtained an official performance certification<\/strong>, both received the lowest score of 6.00 in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Both filters have been independently tested, but we\u2019d much prefer the reassurance of an official performance certification from the NSF, WQA, or IAPMO.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When we initially tested and reviewed Boroux in June 2024, the manufacturer told us that they were in the process of obtaining certifications through the WQA to NSF\/ANSI 42 for Particulate Reduction and <a href=\"https:\/\/info.nsf.org\/Certified\/DWTU\/Listings.asp?Company=13790&amp;Standard=401\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/info.nsf.org\/Certified\/DWTU\/Listings.asp?Company=13790&amp;Standard=401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NSF\/ANSI 401<\/a> for Microplastics (the filter currently only has third-party testing done by IAPMO).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No updates so far. The WQA certification process can take \u201cweeks to months\u201d, so it\u2019s possible that this process is still ongoing. But it\u2019s also possible that Boroux pulled out of testing, was unable to receive certifications, or didn\u2019t actually apply for any performance certifications in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Filtration_Rate\"> \ud83d\udea6Filtration Rate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/best-gravity-water-filter\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/best-gravity-water-filter\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gravity-fed systems<\/a>, Boroux and Berkey\u2019s filtration rates are measured in gallons per hour (GPH). That\u2019s what pulled Berkey\u2019s score down here.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boroux also has a rubber base <\/strong>around the spigot, preventing leaks from the seal, as well as a domed upper chamber, so the bottom of the filters don\u2019t sit in the water once it stops filtering. Plus, the upper chamber fits into the lower chamber tightly, preventing water leaking out from between the two. We experienced all three of these issues with Berkey, so it\u2019s good to see them addressed in the Boroux design.<\/p>\n<p>But despite Boroux including a few upgrades, both units still have design issues that can make them quite annoying to use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First, filling the large vessels with water from your sink is difficult and time-consuming\u2014unless you have a deep sink or a pull-out spray faucet, you\u2019ll probably have to fill them with a separate pitcher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls=\"\" muted=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Filling-Boroux-in-the-sink.mp4\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>A specific issue we noticed with Boroux is that the lid doesn\u2019t have a handle, so when it\u2019s flipped, it can actually hit and cut off part of the top of the filter elements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filter Materials<\/h3>\n<p>Moving on to the design of the filter elements themselves, this is where Boroux and Berkey\u2019s offerings are pretty similar (unsurprising given that they\u2019re made by the same manufacturer).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boroux sells just one filter<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Boroux Foundation filter, containing activated carbon and silver (no other filter materials are disclosed by Boroux).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Berkey sells two filters<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Black Berkey element<\/em>, made from activated carbon, an ion exchange resin, and four additional undisclosed media.<\/li>\n<li>The separate <em>PF-2 fluoride filter<\/em>, made from activated alumina.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div it\u2019s the only filter to have an NSF 372 certification (<a href=\"https:\/\/find.wqa.org\/find-products\/ctl\/detail\/mid\/1054\/cid\/james_enterprise_inc\/sid\/29\/keyword\/boroux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained through the WQA<\/a>) for lead-free design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Berkey hasn\u2019t obtained a materials safety certification, nor does it have a lead-free design certification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"_Setup\">\u2699\ufe0f Setup<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We compared the Boroux and Berkey systems for setup by evaluating their ease of assembly, especially fousing on filter priming, and timing how long these processes took.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls=\"\" muted=\"\" same frustrating filter priming process<\/strong>, which dragged their setup scores down to 6.50.<\/p>\n<p>We were extremely disappointed that Boroux hadn\u2019t fixed this priming issue, since it\u2019s hands-down the most annoying thing about the Black Berkey filters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have a compatible faucet for the blue filter priming tool, you may have to use the included tan priming washers, which is honestly the worst filter priming process we\u2019ve tested to date. That said, if your kitchen sink is small, you might struggle to fit the water chambers inside.<\/p>\n<p>The actual process of replacing the filters is easy, too: <strong>you just unscrew the old filters and screw the replacements filters onto the base of the top chamber<\/strong>.
