Our test results were delivered in the form of an interactive report for each water sample we tested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using these reports, we were able to see which contaminants were detected in our unfiltered water, and how the two filters had altered the concentrations of these contaminants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We used Tap Score\u2019s Health Guideline Levels (HGLs), which are stricter than the federal MCLs, when analyzing our water quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at our test data in the next table.<\/p>\n<p>The LARQ pitcher did a much better job at reducing the majority of contaminants in our water compared to Brita. But Brita doesn\u2019t claim that the Elite filter can reduce many of these impurities, nor is the filter tested or certified to reduce these.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We think Brita\u2019s contaminant reduction score would have been higher if we used the pitcher to filter a water supply containing contaminants that it <em>is <\/em>tested to reduce.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s why testing your water beforehand is so important, so you can buy a filter that\u2019s designed to address your unique water quality issues.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health-Related Contaminants<\/h4>\n<p>First, we analyzed our test reports to see which health-related contaminants our water contained, and how LARQ and Brita compared in reducing these.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our test water was treated groundwater from a shared well, which contained 8 contaminants with possible health effects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of these, there were two impurities \u2013 fluoride and uranium \u2013 that were detected at levels above the HGL. From experience, we typically find that only RO systems and those that use ion exchange resins reduce minerals due to the comprehensive nature of their purification process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So we were surprised to see that the <strong>LARQ PureVis pitcher reduced calcium by 83%, and magnesium by 93%, in our water. It also reduced around 50% sodium.<\/strong> We saw an<strong> increase in potassium from 0 PPM to 77.3 PPM<\/strong> in our filtered water, so we think the pitcher uses a cation exchange resin, which exchanges potassium with other ions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/larq-vs-brita\/about:blank\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" fraction of the contaminants that exist today.<\/p>\n<p>We place a lot of importance on official performance certifications because they provide proof that a filter can reduce contaminants that might not be present in our own water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A great example of this is the Brita Elite pitcher\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/find.wqa.org\/find-products#\/keyword\/OB06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WQA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pld.iapmo.org\/file_info.asp?file_no=0013905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IAMPO<\/a> certifications to NSF Standards 42, 53, and 401, for the reduction of 15 out of the 33 contaminants listed on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brita.com\/assets\/23601607167498ba405a22f7692b3b86.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> performance data sheet<\/a>. These contaminants include BPA, Particulates Class I, asbestos, mercury, PFOS, and PFOA \u2013 <strong>none of which were detected in our own water<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The LARQ pitcher currently isn\u2019t certified \u2013 it only has <a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/larq\/image\/upload\/v1706694889\/Reports\/LARQ_Pitcher_Filtration_Performance_01.24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">third-party testing data<\/a>, so we gave it a poorer score in this subcategory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Filtration_Rate\"> \ud83d\udea6Filtration Rate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The LARQ PureVis and Brita Elite pitchers both use gravity filtration. It filtered water almost five times faster than LARQ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" muted=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Brita-elite-filtration-rate-poster.jpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Brita-elite-filtration-rate.mp4\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>We think a reason for Brita\u2019s slightly faster filtration speed is that its filter has a simpler design, without the resistance of multiple different filtration layers and materials. But this doesn\u2019t explain why LARQ\u2019s filtration rate is so slow, given that many other water filter pitchers we tested had more comprehensive filter designs and still exceeded 2 GPH.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"_Upfront_Cost\">\ud83d\udcb2 Upfront Cost<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Brita and LARQ are on opposite ends of the scale when it comes to upfront cost, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When we got the LARQ PureVis pitcher to test, it <strong>cost $139 including the Advanced filter<\/strong> (the Essential filter is cheaper but less effective). This is pretty pricey \u2013 all the other water filter pitchers we\u2019ve tested so far haven\u2019t exceeded $100.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brita is well-known for being an affordable brand, and the <strong>10-Cup Tahoe pitcher cost $41.99 <\/strong>at the time of our testing. However, the included filter was Brita\u2019s less capable offering, the Basic, so we ended up paying for the Elite filter on top of our initial purchase.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking at value for money, Brita has the less impressive offering, so we wouldn\u2019t expect to spend any more than we did. LARQ is the only pitcher we\u2019ve tested to have a UV light, so again, it makes sense to us why this pitcher is more expensive. It\u2019s made from <strong>polypropylene and SAN (Styrene acrylonitrile resin)<\/strong>, and its plastics felt flimsier and poorer quality compared to LARQ\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastic &amp; Its Potential Setbacks<\/h4>\n<p>Despite the differences in their design feel and quality, LARQ and Brita both have one thing in common: they\u2019re both predominantly plastic systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you want to avoid plastics because you\u2019re concerned about microplastics leaching, you may want to look elsewhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly our concern with the LARQ pitcher because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10103695\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UV exposure increases the leaching or formation<\/a> of \u201cproblematic plastic-associated substances\u201d. <em><strong>Note:<\/strong> We couldn\u2019t find any studies that explicitly discussed UV exposure and plastic leaching from ABS and SMMA (the two plastics used in the LARQ pitcher).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A few water filter manufacturers sell glass or stainless steel pitchers. Brita used to sell a glass pitcher, and you may find it sold by some retailers, but it\u2019s no longer available on the company\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filter Materials &amp; Media<\/h4>\n<p>The type(s) and number of filter media used in a water pitcher filter affect its overall performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Generally, the more filter media that are used in combination, the more thorough the filtration process, and the greater the number of contaminants that can be targeted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We saw a difference in performance between LARQ and Brita Elite, and we think this reflects the difference in their filter designs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The LARQ PureVis Advanced filter uses an <a href=\"https:\/\/waterfilterguru.com\/activated-carbon-water-filters\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">activated carbon filter<\/a> \u2013 and that\u2019s the only filter media that\u2019s disclosed by the manufacturer. You may also choose to download the LARQ app.<\/p>\n<p>The app is currently not compatible with Android devices, so we downloaded it on an iPad. It gave us access to cool features that we don\u2019t have when using a water filter pitcher alone, including water intake tracking. The PureVis Advanced filter has half the capacity of Brita\u2019s: 60 gallons, or up to 3 months. <strong>The filter lifespan depends on how much water you use and the quality of the water being filtered. <\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was an additional maintenance task for the LARQ pitcher only: charging the UV wand. For Brita, we did this once or twice a week. For LARQ, which has the UV wand in the pitcher vessel, we cleaned it around once or twice a month. <em>Although LARQ protects against pathogens in the pitcher, scale and other debris can still accumulate, which is why we still cleaned it out occasionally.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maintenance Costs<\/h3>\n<p>We noticed a significant difference between LARQ and Brita when it came to their ongoing maintenance costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The PureVis Advanced filter has an ongoing cost of $0.54\/ gallon<\/strong>, so it\u2019s up to triple the maintenance cost of most other pitchers we tested, including Brita.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Brita Elite filter is very affordable, with a long-term cost of just $0.17\/ gallon. <\/strong>There are two reasons why the pitcher is so affordable: its filters have a long projected lifespan, and Brita replacement filters are cheaper than from many competitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s worth noting that we upgraded the filters in both of these pitchers: we used the Advanced filter instead of the Essential filter in the LARQ pitcher, and we upgraded from the Basic filter to the Elite filter in the Brita pitcher.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In terms of value for money, Brita is best if you\u2019re looking for the longest filter lifespan and want to keep your maintenance spend to a minimum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But we want to reiterate the importance of knowing what your water contains. Despite having a higher ongoing cost, the LARQ pitcher may be the best value for you if your water contains impurities that LARQ, not Brita, targets. We\u2019re particularly pleased with this offering from Brita given that its pitchers are cheaper and less high-end than LARQ\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shipping\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Both manufacturers tied in the shipping category, too. They offer free shipping, but only if customers reach a certain order threshold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>LARQ offers free shipping for orders above $80 within the contiguous US, while Brita\u2019s minimum spend is lower: $35.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that LARQ\u2019s pitchers are more expensive than Brita\u2019s, and for both manufacturers, you\u2019ll get free shipping on your initial pitcher purchase. But you\u2019ll probably have to pay a shipping fee for replacement filters unless you buy them elsewhere.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Returns<\/h3>\n<p>LARQ and Brita both offer a 30-day returns policy, which is pretty standard for water filter pitchers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Brita got the higher score in this category because we identified a flaw with LARQ\u2019s returns: the product <em>must be unused and in its original packaging<\/em> for a full refund to be issued.
